Sacramento Urges Public Feedback on Urgent Sound Policy Update

UPDATE: The City of Sacramento is urgently calling for public feedback on its newly proposed Community Sound Management Framework, a critical initiative aimed at modernizing how entertainment sound is regulated. This announcement comes as the city seeks to balance the vibrant entertainment scene with residents’ quality of life.

Officials from Sound Music Cities have crafted this framework based on insights from over 1,100 survey responses and data from the Sacramento Music Census. Don Pitts, president of Sound Music Cities, emphasized that the community has voiced significant interest in improving sound management practices. The drafted framework includes innovative strategies, such as integrating Sound Impact Plans with permits and appointing a dedicated official to ensure consistency across city departments.

The proposed framework aims to enhance Sacramento’s current sound management protocols, which will include improved communication efforts, stricter enforcement of source-based sound measurements, and extended management of low-frequency sounds to alleviate bass complaints. Megan Van Voorhis, director of Convention and Cultural Services, highlighted the importance of these changes in fostering a harmonious environment for both residents and cultural activities.

Residents, venue owners, and event organizers are encouraged to participate in community meetings scheduled for December 8, 9, and 10, 2023. This is a crucial opportunity for stakeholders to voice their opinions and shape the future of sound management in Sacramento. Dustin Hollingsworth, assistant director of Convention and Cultural Services, stated that the input gathered during these meetings will play a vital role in guiding the framework’s implementation, which is expected in 2026.

All relevant documents, including the full Community Sound Management Framework and the Sacramento Music Census, are readily accessible on the City’s official website.
