UPDATE: St. Scholastica’s women’s hockey team suffered a hard-fought 3-1 defeat against Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Sunday, marking a disappointing end to their weekend.
With only 1:57 left in the game, a power play goal from Lyndi Schubert briefly lifted the spirits of the Saints, narrowing the score to 2-1. However, a late empty-net goal sealed the outcome, leaving St. Scholastica with just 17 shots compared to UWEC’s 43 shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Makenzie Cole stood strong, making an impressive 40 saves, but the loss drops the Saints’ record to 3-5-1. The team is set to return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a critical home-and-home series against Hamline, beginning Friday in Duluth.
Meanwhile, the St. Scholastica men’s hockey team faced an equally challenging weekend at the Superior Showdown. They were unable to secure a victory, losing 5-0 to Lawrence on Friday and 5-2 to host Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday.
On Friday, Lawrence’s goalie, Owen Carlson, shut out the Saints on 26 shots, while five different Vikings found the net. Kaeden Edstrom made 20 saves for St. Scholastica’s effort.
Saturday’s match saw the Saints rally in the second period after goals from Evan Pahos and Luke McCarthy tied the game at 2-2. However, Wisconsin-Superior responded with three unanswered goals, including two on the power play, to secure their victory.
With both teams struggling this weekend, the focus now shifts to their upcoming series against Hamline. Fans will be watching closely to see if the Saints can turn their fortunes around as they approach the end of the calendar year.
