A new initiative has emerged in St. Petersburg, Florida, as the Jackson Copeland Foundation officially launched with a mission to combat hard-to-treat leukemia variants and support affected patients and families. Founded by Jeff and Claire Copeland, the organization honors their son, Jackson Rees Copeland, who tragically passed away in May 2024 at the age of 22 after battling acute myeloid leukemia (AML) for two years.
The foundation aims to fund research targeting high-risk leukemia variants, particularly aggressive forms like the AML-FLT3 variant, which Jackson faced. While advancements have improved cure rates for certain types of leukemia, many aggressive forms remain difficult to treat and often lead to poor outcomes.
“Curing leukemia is a lofty goal, but we are playing the long game,” said Jeff Copeland, the Foundation’s Founder and CEO. “It may not happen in our lifetimes, but our foundation will live on until it does. In the meantime, we are honored to support the patients, families, and caregivers currently in the fight.”
The Jackson Copeland Foundation addresses not only the need for research funding but also the immediate financial burdens that accompany a leukemia diagnosis. Recognizing the physical, emotional, and financial strain on families, the organization provides direct assistance to support those affected.
“Jackson’s bravery and indomitable spirit were an inspiration to everyone who knew him,” the Foundation stated. “We are channeling that spirit into a relentless pursuit of better treatments and a cure, ensuring no family has to face this battle alone.”
In addition to its primary goals, the Foundation is committed to engaging local high school students who qualify for Bright Futures Scholarships. It plans to create personalized volunteer and service-learning opportunities for these students, connecting them with meaningful community service while helping fulfill their scholarship requirements.
The Foundation is now accepting donations and volunteer applications to further its mission. Interested individuals can learn more about Jackson’s story, request assistance, or contribute to the cause by visiting https://jacksoncopeland.org/.
