Edward Hospital, part of Endeavor Health in Naperville, has been awarded an “A” grade for patient safety by The Leapfrog Group, a respected nonprofit organization that evaluates healthcare facilities across the United States. This recognition stems from Leapfrog’s recent biannual safety grades, which assess hospitals’ effectiveness in safeguarding patients from medical errors, accidents, injuries, and infections.
The Leapfrog grading system employs a straightforward A to F scale, reflecting the hospitals’ performance in various safety measures. Cheri Moore, the system assistant vice president of acute care quality and patient safety at Endeavor Health, expressed pride in the hospital’s commitment to patient safety, stating, “We’re fully invested in having the safest healthcare for our patients.”
Consistent High Performance
Edward Hospital has maintained impressive grades since 2022, consistently achieving either an A or B rating. In addition to its current grade, the hospital received A designations in the spring and fall of 2023 and 2024. Moore highlighted the significance of the numerical scores provided by Leapfrog, noting they reflect strong performance and meaningful improvements in patient care.
This year, Edward Hospital excelled particularly in managing complications during hospital stays. A key focus has been on preventing infections. Moore explained that efforts to minimize infection rates include early removal of lines and tubes, which significantly reduces the risk of patient infections. Notably, the hospital outperformed the average in preventing bloodstream infections.
In addition to infection control, Edward Hospital prioritizes patient safety through measures such as bed alarms and ensuring call lights are accessible. These practices are vital for patients experiencing dizziness or mobility issues, helping to prevent falls. The hospital scored above average in both categories related to patient falls, demonstrating effective strategies to enhance safety.
Recognition Among Peers
Six Endeavor Health hospitals received A grades in this round of evaluations, including Elmhurst, Evanston, Glenbrook, Highland Park, and Northwest Community hospitals. Notably, Elmhurst Hospital stands out as one of only 11 hospitals nationwide and three in Illinois to have maintained an A grade consistently since the program’s inception in 2012.
The Leapfrog Group’s grading system is based on more than 30 national performance measures, providing a comprehensive overview of each hospital’s safety and quality of care. For more detailed information about the Leapfrog grades, interested parties can visit www.hospitalsafetygrade.org.
