Moscow Students Launch Toiletries Drive for Local Families

Moscow elementary students are stepping up to support their community by organizing a toiletries drive aimed at assisting local families in need. The initiative, spearheaded by fourth graders at Lena Whitmore Elementary, will run until December 12, 2023.

Students and community members can contribute by dropping off new toiletries, including toilet paper, deodorant, toothpaste, children’s body wash, and shampoo, at a designated bin located at the front entrance of the school. The collected items will be delivered to the Moscow School District’s Family Resource Hub, situated in the old Russell Elementary building.

Community Engagement Through Education

The Family Resource Hub was established last year to provide essential items such as clothing, toiletries, and school supplies to students and families who require assistance. According to fourth-grade teacher Tiffany Mayes, the toiletries drive is part of a broader educational initiative that focuses on community service. Mayes emphasized her commitment to teaching students about the importance of helping others and noted that the school aims to engage in charitable activities annually.

The drive was initiated after the school learned that toiletries are among the most pressing needs at the Family Resource Hub. Mayes explained that the students quickly mobilized to organize the donation effort.

In addition to collecting items, students are engaged in various activities related to the drive. Lindsey Lee, another fourth-grade teacher, stated that the lesson includes writing essays on the significance of giving back, creating posters to promote the drive, and producing a video that was shared on social media platforms such as Facebook.

Collaborative Efforts Across Schools

Once the toiletries drive concludes, students will have the opportunity to visit the resource hub for a field trip. This visit will allow them to volunteer and witness the positive impact of their contributions on the community.

Lena Whitmore Elementary is not alone in its charitable efforts. According to the Moscow School District’s Facebook page, students from Moscow High School also contributed significantly by organizing a winter clothing drive. Led by students Caitlin Highfill and Haili Hull, this initiative resulted in two truckloads of clothing and a monetary donation totaling $750.

The Family Resource Hub operates on Tuesdays from 14:00 to 17:00, offering essential support to families in the area. This collaborative spirit among local schools highlights the commitment of students and educators to fostering a culture of generosity and community support in Moscow.
