Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Launches on PS5 After Initial “No”

URGENT UPDATE: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is set for its official launch on December 8, 2023, marking a groundbreaking moment as it becomes available on the PS5. This marks the first time this iconic flight simulation series has ever been released on a PlayStation console, following early access availability.

This significant shift in strategy comes after Xbox Game Studios initially rejected the idea of bringing the franchise to PlayStation. In a recent interview, Jorg Neumann, Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, disclosed that he proposed a PS5 version during the game’s development, but was met with a firm “no.” The change of heart from Xbox reflects a broader initiative to expand its portfolio across multiple platforms.

Neumann explained that after the success of Flight Simulator 2020 on Xbox, he recognized a vast audience eager for flight simulation experiences beyond PC gaming. “We found millions of new fans on Xbox that had never seen the flight sim because they’re just not PC gamers,” he noted. This audience surge, coupled with Sony’s proactive approach in reaching out to Microsoft, paved the way for the PS5 port.

In a fascinating twist, Neumann revealed that Sony had a vested interest in the franchise. An executive at Sony, passionate about flight simulation, initiated discussions with Microsoft, leading to a dramatic shift in Xbox’s multiplatform strategy. “I think that really kicked off a whole avalanche of Xbox titles coming to PlayStation,” he stated.

The launch on PS5 comes with significant improvements. The game’s client size has been reduced to just 8 GB by leveraging cloud technology, which is a game-changer for future platform expansions. Neumann hinted that this advancement opens possibilities for ports to other platforms, including mobile and the anticipated Switch 2.

Regarding the PS5 version’s performance, Neumann confirmed that the game will run at a resolution of 2560×1440 on standard PS5 and 3200×1800 on the PS5 Pro, targeting nearly native 4K quality. However, he cautioned that consistent 60 FPS may not always be achievable due to the game’s expansive environments.

VR support is also in the pipeline. Neumann assured that while the PSVR2 functionality is not ready for immediate launch, they are actively optimizing it. “We’re actually pretty close, but not 100% there,” he explained, emphasizing the commitment to delivering a polished experience.

As the flight simulation community eagerly anticipates this launch, the impact is already palpable. Neumann noted an increase in players utilizing specialized controllers since the game’s arrival on consoles. “Flight Simulator is a hobby, and once you go somewhere, you’re staying,” he remarked, hinting at the potential for growth in user engagement and hardware development.

The release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PS5 is more than just a game launch; it represents a significant shift in gaming dynamics, showcasing how Xbox is adapting to a rapidly changing industry landscape. Expect to see more Xbox titles making their way to PlayStation in the near future.
