Greenville High School Hosts Festive Holiday Dinner for 1,100 Students

URGENT UPDATE: Greenville High School just hosted its much-anticipated annual holiday dinner on December 9, 2023, bringing festive cheer to over 1,100 students. The school’s food and nutrition team served a traditional meal designed to ensure every student, regardless of their background, could enjoy a taste of the holiday season.

Authorities confirm that this year’s meal featured a hearty spread, including mashed potatoes, glazed maple carrots, and freshly roasted ham. The event aims to bridge the gap for students who may not have access to such celebratory dinners at home, particularly those from low-income families or international exchange students unfamiliar with American holiday traditions.

Dan Kuk, Greenville’s Food and Nutrition Director, expressed his dedication to making the holiday dinner accessible to all. “This is our take on a holiday dinner for Greenville High School students and it’s a tradition we’ve had for years,” he stated. “Not all of them get to participate in this type of meal, so we ensure everyone has the opportunity.”

The holiday dinner was provided at no cost to the students, continuing the school district’s commitment to free or reduced breakfast and lunch programs. Kuk acknowledged the added expense but emphasized the district’s support in funding this special event.

After serving a smaller-scale holiday dinner at the middle school, Kuk praised his staff for their efforts in making the event a success. “I’m so grateful for my staff and the extra effort they put into meals like this,” he said. “Their attitude of wanting to serve the student body is commendable.”

As students lined up for their meals, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement. The school played Christmas music, with help from the DECA students who decorated the dining area and served delicious desserts like homemade apple crumble and cherry turnovers. Senior and DECA vice president of public relations, Emily Fox, highlighted the organization’s role in enhancing the experience for everyone involved. “We’ve had a lot of volunteers putting everything up, making sure everything is clean between lunch periods,” Fox shared.

Students expressed their appreciation for the holiday feast, which served to elevate their spirits. “It’s really nice and it makes me feel festive,” said sophomore Kendal Taylor. Classmate Gabby Pelak added, “The meal was good. I had the ham and mashed potatoes and carrots, and it was really good. It was also nice to have something to look forward to at lunch.”

Adding to the festive mood, the students were treated to a visit from Claude Johnson, a GHS employee and Greenville City Councilman, who donned a Santa costume alongside The Grinch. Students flocked to pose for photos, further brightening the day’s events.

This annual holiday dinner not only fulfills the nutritional needs of students but also fosters a sense of community and belonging. As the holiday season unfolds, this gathering serves as a reminder of the importance of inclusivity and shared experiences.
