Broadview Zoning Board Rejects ICE Expansion Proposal Amid Outcry

UPDATE: The Broadview Zoning Board of Appeals has just rejected a contentious proposal that could have allowed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to expand its operations in the village. This decision was made during a heated meeting on October 19, 2023, where numerous residents voiced their concerns and confusion over the potential implications of the ordinance.

The proposal, which aimed to impose restrictions on ICE’s property expansion, failed to clarify whether it would ultimately hinder or facilitate the agency’s activities in Broadview. Attendees expressed skepticism about the ordinance’s effectiveness, particularly in light of the agency’s ongoing presence in the community, where it operates a detention center that has been the focal point for protests against increased immigration enforcement.

Broadview Building Commissioner and Economic Director David Upshaw recommended the proposal, which would have mandated that prisons and detention centers obtain a special uses permit and prohibited them from being located within 1,000 feet of residential areas, schools, daycares, and other sensitive locations. Upshaw stated that the ordinance was designed to ensure secure facilities with proper fencing and parking requirements.

However, the Zoning Board voted unanimously against recommending the proposal, reflecting widespread public discontent. Residents packed the village hall, emphasizing the need for greater transparency and community input. Broadview resident Janelle Miller criticized the lack of clarity surrounding the proposal, stating, “I believe this is something that shouldn’t be voted on until we know what this is actually about.”

Others, like Allisan Galvan, raised alarms that the ordinance essentially provided “permission with conditions” for ICE to continue its operations in Broadview, without outright prohibiting private prisons or detention centers.

Residents are now looking to the Village Board, which could still override the Zoning Board’s recommendation with a supermajority vote. The urgency of the situation has galvanized community members, who are demanding to be included in discussions that could significantly impact their neighborhood.

As the situation develops, residents are encouraged to stay informed and engage with local officials. The stakes are high, and community voices are essential in shaping the future of Broadview.

Watch for updates as officials respond to public outcry and reconsider their stance on ICE’s presence in the village. This is a critical time for Broadview, where the balance between community safety and federal enforcement is being fiercely debated.
