Kauai’s Christmas Fund Supports Families Seeking Stability

As the holiday season approaches, the Christmas Fund in Kauai aims to assist families and individuals facing challenges by providing essential resources and support. Through Christmas Eve, the initiative highlights various stories of those in need, encouraging community members to contribute through donations managed by the Zonta Club of Kauai.

Profiles of Resilience and Hope

The stories shared by the Christmas Fund illustrate the determination of people striving for stability. Theodore and Margo, for instance, have faced homelessness for several years, living in their van at Salt Ponds beach park with their three children. Both parents have recently transitioned into low-income housing after participating in homeless programs. They are now seeking assistance with school supplies for their children as they work towards a more stable future.

Bernard White, a single man, encountered difficulties securing housing due to a criminal record and challenges in finding steady employment. Since entering the homeless program, he has secured a job at a local restaurant and is actively working on applying for low-income rental units. Currently on the HUD Section 8 waitlist, Bernard aims to save enough to rent a low-cost studio while maintaining financial security during the process.

Sam Holt has faced homelessness for many years, struggling to find employment after serving time for a minor misdemeanor. A Kauai native, he is now enrolled in shelter programs where he works on his resume and job applications. With access to shelter and stability, Sam is optimistic about rebuilding his life.

Cindy, another participant in the homeless programs, has battled addiction for many years. However, with support from various classes and programs, she is nearing one year of sobriety. Currently residing in a shelter, Cindy diligently attends case management meetings and is applying for low-income housing, all while focusing on developing positive habits.

Daryl, an older man living independently, faces mobility challenges due to being wheelchair-bound and having only one leg. Assistance in acquiring a comfortable cushion for his wheelchair would significantly enhance his quality of life, as he often expresses discomfort during long periods of sitting.

Community Support and Contributions

The Christmas Fund operates with the support of community donations, which directly benefit individuals like Theodore, Margo, Bernard, Sam, Cindy, and Daryl. Each contribution is accounted for, with administrative costs kept to a minimum to ensure that funds primarily go towards providing Christmas presents and groceries for those in need.

Individuals interested in supporting the initiative can make donations through the Christmas Fund website at https://zonta.vbotickets.com/donations/7678 or by sending checks made payable to the Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation at P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI 96766. Donors contributing $200 or more will have the opportunity to have their photo published in The Garden Island. Fundraising efforts for the Christmas Fund are also welcomed and encouraged.

This holiday season, the community of Kauai has an opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of those facing adversity. Through the Christmas Fund, individuals can extend a helping hand, providing hope and stability to families and individuals striving for a brighter future.
