Greely Girls Basketball Triumphs with Fifth Straight Win

Greely High School’s girls basketball team achieved their fifth consecutive victory by defeating York High School 40-38 in a tightly contested Class B South matchup on Saturday, March 15, 2024. The game, held in Cumberland, saw Sophia Littel play a pivotal role, scoring 10 of her total 14 points in the fourth quarter, helping Greely improve to a record of 5-1. The team’s winning streak has included three narrow victories by just two points.

The match remained close throughout, with York leading 23-22 as they entered the final quarter. Despite the loss, York’s Nya Avery contributed significantly, scoring 15 points, while Maddigan Fitzgerald added 13 points to the scoreboard. York’s record now stands at 3-3.

In other girls basketball action, Old Orchard Beach edged out Mountain Valley with a score of 26-23. Corinne Androkitis led the Seagulls with 10 points, while both Reagan Partridge and Ryder Blake contributed seven points each. Bella Dupuis was the standout for Mountain Valley, scoring nine points.

Boys Basketball Highlights

In boys basketball, Mountain Valley secured a decisive 75-51 victory over Old Orchard Beach. Blake Small was the star for Mountain Valley, finishing with an impressive 30 points. Dylan Theriault added 13 points, and Logan Crews contributed 10 points. For Old Orchard Beach, Trot Moody led the scoring with 17 points, while both Caleb Dupree and Wes Gallant netted 12 points each.

Freeport also achieved a significant win, defeating Fryeburg Academy 55-31. Drew Pound led the Falcons with 14 points, while Wyatt Lavallee scored 11 points, with 11 of those coming in the second half. Freeport outscored Fryeburg 24-9 in the third quarter, effectively breaking open a previously close contest. Robbie Hazlewood was Fryeburg’s top scorer with 12 points, all from three-point range.

In another boys basketball matchup, Mt. Blue triumphed over Skowhegan, with a final score of 51-42. Oliver Cormier led Mt. Blue with 15 points, while teammates Cooper Abell and Evan Drake each added 10 points. Jackson Newton was the leading scorer for Skowhegan with 10 points.

Ice Hockey and Girls Hockey Updates

In boys hockey, Lewiston Co-op secured a commanding 5-0 victory against Windham Co-op. Aizyk Laliberte shone with a hat trick and an assist, marking a standout performance for the Lewiston/Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse team, which improved their record to 3-2. Anthony Kavanaugh and Landon Desjardins also scored, with Kavanaugh contributing an assist. Kai Stockford achieved a shutout, stopping 24 shots, while Windham’s Sawyer Perkins made 32 saves.

In girls hockey, Gorham Co-op clinched a narrow 2-1 victory over Falmouth/Scarborough. Lily Keene scored just 23 seconds into overtime, sealing the win for Gorham/Bonny Eagle/Massabesic/Westbrook/Fryeburg, who now hold a record of 5-3. Falmouth/Scarborough had taken an early lead with a goal from Hope Melevsky, but Maya Stanley equalized midway through the first period. Celina Doucette stepped up with 13 saves for Gorham, while Tessa Woodbury made 33 saves for the visitors.
