Oscar Smith’s Johnson Named Class 6 Offensive Player of the Year

UPDATE: In a stunning announcement, Oscar Smith senior wide receiver Travis Johnson has been awarded the VHSL state Class 6 Offensive Player of the Year. This recognition comes as the Tigers’ head coach Chris Scott was also named Coach of the Year after leading the team to its second consecutive title and fourth overall during his tenure.

Johnson, who is committed to Michigan, showcased an impressive season, catching 56 passes for 1,157 yards and scoring 15 touchdowns. His performance solidified his position as a top athlete in high school football, marking his second consecutive all-state recognition.

The accolades extend beyond Johnson, as seven other Tigers joined him on the first team, including junior quarterback Lonnie Andrews and senior offensive lineman Dory Wilson. The standout defensive players include sophomore defensive lineman Lincoln Halliday, senior linebacker Malachi White, senior defensive back Jayden Covil, senior punt returner Quali Price, and senior all-purpose player Na’Rod Jarvis.

The team’s success culminated in a thrilling victory against Indian River, where they triumphed 33-20 at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Virginia, on September 20, 2025.

In college football news, Old Dominion University is experiencing significant changes. Starting tight end Jailen Butler has announced his intention to enter the transfer portal, according to his representative. Standing at 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, Butler has made 21 starts with 18 career catches for 103 yards and one touchdown.
