BREAKING: Police officers in Queens fatally shot a man early this morning after he allegedly charged at them wielding a box cutter. The incident occurred at approximately 12:25 a.m. on December 21, inside an apartment building located at 1170 Nameoke St. in Far Rockaway.
The situation escalated quickly after officers from the 101st Precinct responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute between a father and son. Upon arrival, police met with the father and mother but could not locate the 29-year-old son inside the apartment.
As the officers exited with the parents, they encountered the son in the hallway, brandishing a box cutter. NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera stated, “Officers gave multiple verbal commands to the male to drop the weapon; however, he did not comply.”
In a startling turn, the father retreated behind the officers as the son charged at them. One officer deployed a Taser, while another immediately discharged their firearm, striking the suspect.
Emergency medical services rushed to the scene, and officers performed CPR until the suspect was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The responding officers were evaluated at a local hospital and reported no injuries.
Chief Rivera emphasized the dangers faced by police daily, stating, “This incident once again demonstrates how a routine call can quickly escalate into an extremely dangerous situation.”
