El Salvador Sentences MS-13 Member to 1,335 Years for Crimes

A member of the notorious MS-13 gang has received a staggering prison sentence of 1,335 years following his conviction for multiple serious offenses. On December 21, 2023, authorities in El Salvador announced that Marvin Abel Hernandez Palacios was sentenced for crimes that include aggravated homicide, aggravated femicide, extortion, and kidnapping.

Palacios’ sentence is part of a broader crackdown on gang activity in El Salvador, where the MS-13 gang has been labeled as one of the most dangerous in the world. The Attorney General’s Office reported that a total of 248 MS-13 members were sentenced on December 18, with prison terms ranging from 463 to 958 years. This initiative reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to dismantle the gang’s influence in the region.

Details of the Sentences

The sweeping sentences come as El Salvador grapples with a significant gang problem that has plagued the nation for decades. The Attorney General’s Office revealed that the gang’s criminal activities have impacted 169 victims. Among the serious crimes linked to the gang are the murders of siblings Karen and Eduardo Guerrero Toledo in December 2021, and soccer player Claudia Jimena Granados in October 2021. Moreover, they are also implicated in the murder of a university student who disappeared in March 2019, as well as another student in April 2020.

The Attorney General’s office outlined the extensive charges against the gang members, which include 43 counts of aggravated homicide, 42 counts of enforced disappearance, three counts of aggravated femicide, and numerous counts related to extortion and trafficking. The gang has been known to extort money from business owners, forcing many to shut down operations due to threats.

Context of Gang Violence in El Salvador

Before a major government crackdown in 2022, MS-13 and its rival, Barrio 18, controlled approximately 80% of the country’s territory. El Salvador has one of the highest murder rates in the world, with both gangs responsible for around 200,000 deaths over the past three decades.

In 2018, former U.S. President Donald Trump characterized MS-13 as “probably the meanest, worst gang in the world” and labeled them a terrorist organization. His comments emphasized the group as an “evil” entity, further highlighting the urgent need for international attention and intervention regarding gang violence in Central America.

The recent sentencing of Marvin Abel Hernandez Palacios and his gang associates marks a significant moment in El Salvador’s fight against organized crime. As the government intensifies its efforts to restore order, the long-term impact of these actions on gang activity and public safety remains to be seen.
