On December 19, 2025, a significant moment in Alhambra’s history unfolded as past and present princesses of the Rose Court gathered at the Francis Q House in Alhambra, California. The event marked the first time in nearly 60 years that an Alhambra resident, Keiko Rakin, has been selected for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses. Rakin, a current student at Alhambra High School, met with Barbara Beckley, who was a member of the Rose Court in 1967.
Rakin’s selection is particularly notable as she is the first student to represent Alhambra on the Rose Court since the organization updated its geographic eligibility requirements. Beckley, who was attending Pasadena City College when she was chosen, expressed her excitement about Rakin’s achievement. “We’re like Alhambra sisters,” Beckley said. “Being a Rose Princess is something that stays with you all your life.”
This historic gathering was facilitated by the Alhambra Historical Society & Museum, where Beckley serves as a founding member. She was born and raised in Alhambra and later returned to live in the family home built by her great-grandparents in 1912 after a fulfilling career as a travel writer. Reflecting on the meeting, Beckley expressed pride in Rakin’s accomplishments and the representation of their city.
During the visit, Rakin and Beckley shared personal experiences of their selection for the Rose Court, recalling the overwhelming emotions they felt upon receiving the news. Both expressed a deep sense of connection to Alhambra and the legacy of being a Rose Princess. Rakin received a warm welcome, with gifts including roses from Mike McCollum, a local supporter of the Rose Court.
The gathering not only celebrated the individual achievements of Rakin and Beckley but also highlighted the importance of community and heritage within Alhambra. As the city looks forward to the upcoming Rose Parade, the bond between these two princesses serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of Alhambra’s legacy in the Tournament of Roses.
