Community Mourns the Loss of Carolyn Mailliard Hacker, 87

Carolyn Mailliard Hacker, a beloved community member and dedicated volunteer, passed away on November 21, 2025, at the age of 87 due to complications related to Alzheimer’s disease. Her death marks the end of a life rich in family, community service, and personal passions, leaving a profound impact on those who knew her.

Early Life and Education

Born in 1938 in San Francisco, California, Carolyn was the eldest daughter of J.W. Mailliard and Margaret Field. She was also the first granddaughter of Ward and Kate Mailliard. Carolyn’s family had deep connections throughout the Bay Area, with ties to places like San Geronimo, Cotati, Yorkville, and San Francisco, which remained significant throughout her life.

During her childhood, Carolyn traveled extensively with her family while her father served in the United States Army. After World War II, they returned to San Francisco, where Carolyn received her education at KD Burke School and Katherine Branson Girls School, eventually attending Connecticut College for Women.

A Life of Service and Passion

In 1963, Carolyn settled in San Rafael, where she would spend more than six decades. Her love for gardening blossomed during this time, and she took pride in her beautiful plants, earning multiple awards at the Marin County Fair. Alongside her gardening, Carolyn enjoyed knitting and dedicated herself to genealogy, investing countless hours in researching and preserving her family’s rich history for future generations.

Carolyn’s commitment to her community was evident through her volunteer work within the Miller Creek Elementary School District and the San Rafael City Schools District from 1972 to 1980. She believed in the importance of education and actively supported various initiatives to benefit local children and families.

Her legacy is carried on by her loving family. Carolyn is survived by her husband, Paul Hacker; her children, Barbara (Greg) and Lyn (Don); her grandchildren, Andrew (Katy), Chris, Emily (Mike), Amanda, and Kevin; and her great-granddaughter, Jocelyn. She is also remembered by her sisters, Kathy and Margot, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life is planned in honor of Carolyn’s birthday and Mother’s Day in May 2026. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that memorial contributions be made to the San Rafael Public Library Foundation or the Marin Humane Society, reflecting Carolyn’s enduring commitment to community service and support for local organizations.

Carolyn Mailliard Hacker’s legacy of love and dedication will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her.
