Netflix has announced the return of the iconic sci-fi series Stargate SG-1 to its platform, marking its comeback after a three-year hiatus. This new licensing agreement with MGM, now part of Amazon, will make all ten seasons of the series available to subscribers in the United States and select international regions starting on February 15, 2026.
Return of a Classic
With the addition of Stargate SG-1, Netflix aims to enhance its New Year’s lineup for 2026. The show, often regarded as a cornerstone of the sci-fi genre alongside Star Trek and Doctor Who, is celebrated for its engaging storytelling and character development. Viewers can expect to follow the adventures of Colonel Jack O’Neill, portrayed by Richard Dean Anderson, along with his team, including Dr. Daniel Jackson (played by Michael Shanks), Major Samantha Carter (played by Amanda Tapping), and the Jaffa warrior Teal’c (played by Christopher Judge).
The series originally aired from 1997 to 2007, continuing the narrative established in the 1994 film directed by Roland Emmerich. The show previously returned to Netflix in late 2020 but was removed on December 1, 2022, after the expiration of the licensing agreement. This led to speculation that it might not return to the platform.
Future of the Franchise
Currently, the agreement covers only Stargate SG-1. The spin-offs, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, remain available exclusively on Prime Video and Pluto TV in various regions. However, if SG-1 performs well on Netflix, there is potential for the inclusion of Atlantis later in 2026. An Amazon representative confirmed that several MGM titles are expected to be added to Netflix, building upon the recent release of Hunters and Fargo.
In addition to TV series, Netflix will also feature movies from the MGM catalog, including the James Bond collection and Legally Blonde, in various international markets. Recently, Licorice Pizza, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, was also confirmed for the US lineup in January 2026.
Interestingly, there were past discussions about a potential reboot of Stargate on Netflix, which ultimately did not materialize. A new reboot is now in development for Prime Video, with Martin Gero at the helm, as announced last month.
As fans await the return of Stargate SG-1 to Netflix, the response has been largely positive. Many viewers are eager to revisit the series that has made a lasting impact on the sci-fi community. The upcoming return allows both new viewers and long-time fans to experience the legendary adventures once again.
