The Lynnwood Hygiene Center, which provides essential services such as warm showers, food, and clothing to homeless individuals, has been saved from imminent closure thanks to a timely intervention by travel writer and television host Rick Steves. Steves purchased the property for $2.25 million, ensuring that the center can continue its operations and support the vulnerable population it serves.
Community Relief from Potential Closure
As the center faced the possibility of shutting its doors before the end of the year, Sandra Mears, the executive director for the foundation behind the hygiene center, expressed her disbelief upon learning of the situation. “I was in disbelief,” Mears said, adding, “But I wouldn’t go down without a fight.” Her determination led to a frantic search for a solution, culminating in an unexpected email from Steves, which ultimately facilitated the purchase.
The center, which has operated rent-free since its inception in 2020, caters to approximately 45 people daily. Brett Barham, now a manager at the hygiene center, stated, “I wish there was a place like this when I was out there.” He noted that the potential closure caused significant distress among regular visitors, who relied on the center for basic needs.
Personal Stories Highlight the Center’s Importance
One of the center’s frequent visitors, Amber Mayor, described how her family uses the facility almost every day. Parking their vehicle at the center for several hours not only offers a safe haven but also access to vital resources. “For your own self-worth, it’s so important,” she said, referring to the impact of having a place to shower and use the bathroom. Mayor expressed her relief upon hearing that the center would remain open, stating, “I cried; it was such a weight off my shoulders to know that we were still going to have this place.”
The Lynnwood Hygiene Center operates Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the winter months and extends to 6 p.m. in the summer. Its continuation is a significant relief for many in the community who rely on its services for dignity and basic hygiene.
Rick Steves has described the acquisition as “the most beautiful Christmas present (he) could have.” His commitment to ensuring the hygiene center remains operational underscores the importance of community support in addressing homelessness and providing essential services. The center’s survival reflects a broader dedication to social responsibility and compassion within the community.
