Broncos Sign Sam Mustipher from Chargers to Fill Center Void

The Denver Broncos have addressed a critical need on their offensive line by signing center Sam Mustipher from the practice squad of the Los Angeles Chargers. This move follows an injury to starter Luke Wattenberg, who recently secured a $48 million contract extension. Wattenberg suffered the injury during the Broncos’ Week 17 matchup, prompting the team to seek immediate reinforcement.

The Broncos, aiming to maintain their competitive edge in the AFC West, turned to the free agent market and practice squads to bolster their depth. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the official announcement of Mustipher’s signing came on December 26, just a day after the Broncos secured a victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas night.

Mustipher’s NFL Journey

At 29 years old, Mustipher brings five years of NFL experience to the Broncos. He began his professional career with the Chicago Bears in 2020, where he started seven games while appearing in nine during his rookie season. Mustipher continued to solidify his role by starting all 17 games in 2021 and 16 of 17 in 2022. Following his tenure with the Bears, he joined the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, where he participated in nine games, starting two.

Most recently, Mustipher joined the Chargers in 2024, contributing in 12 games but starting only once. As he has not yet seen action in the current 2025 season, the Broncos’ addition of Mustipher to their 53-man roster signifies a strategic move to enhance their center depth as they approach the playoff stages.

With Wattenberg sidelined, Alex Forsyth will step in as the starting center for the Broncos. Mustipher is expected to serve as the backup, providing essential depth and experience as the team aims for a successful postseason run.

Looking Ahead

The Broncos’ signing of Mustipher not only fills an immediate need following Wattenberg’s injury but also reflects the team’s commitment to maintaining a strong offensive line. As they prepare for the playoffs, the addition of a seasoned player like Mustipher could prove invaluable in their pursuit of a championship.

This strategic move is a testament to the Broncos’ proactive approach during the late season, as they look to capitalize on their current momentum within the AFC West. With the playoffs on the horizon, the Broncos are focused on solidifying their roster and enhancing their chances for success.
