Skyline High Alumni Honor Coach John Beam with Tribute Screening

UPDATE: The legacy of beloved Oakland Coach John Beam continues to resonate as alumni from Skyline High School held a special screening of the documentary series Last Chance U on Saturday, October 14, 2023. This heartfelt tribute comes just weeks after Beam’s tragic passing, further solidifying his impact on the community he cherished.

The event attracted generations of former students, all eager to honor a coach who dedicated 45 years to teaching and mentoring young athletes. Charles Lassey, a Class of 2000 alumnus and organizer of the tribute, remarked, “It took Coach Beam getting taken away from us to say, ‘Hey. We need to do something.'” This powerful sentiment encapsulates the urgency felt by the community to celebrate Beam’s life and contributions.

The gathering also served as a fundraiser for a Class of 2000 teacher appreciation grant, reinforcing the values Beam instilled in his students. Alumnus Christina Macalino, who had Beam as her P.E. teacher, shared her fond memories: “He was tough, but tough love helped bring out the best in students. He believed in the Oakland community.”

Beam’s influence was profound; he coached over 20 athletes who advanced to play in the NFL. Tragically, he was shot and killed in November 2022 at Laney College, where he served as athletic director. Authorities confirmed the incident as a targeted shooting allegedly perpetrated by a former student.

Mark Stauffer, a Class of 1978 graduate who knew Beam for decades, described him as a father figure, stating, “He cared so much about everybody’s upbringing. He took guys out of the gutter and turned them into Pro-Bowlers.”

The emotional outpouring continued with Eric Romero, a Class of 2017 graduate, who, despite not being directly coached by Beam, felt compelled to attend the tribute. “He saw more than just student-athletes. He wanted to ensure they were taken care of,” Romero reflected, highlighting Beam’s commitment to the holistic development of his students.

This event is a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of Coach John Beam, whose impact on the Oakland community will be felt for generations to come. As tributes continue to pour in, the overwhelming support from alumni and community members reflects the profound loss felt by all who knew him.

What happens next? The community plans to continue honoring Beam’s legacy through ongoing events and initiatives that celebrate his spirit and dedication to youth development in Oakland. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
