Kenneth L. Horne, a prominent figure in the interior design industry, passed away on December 22, 2025, at The Hamptons in Tyler, Texas. He was 95 years old. Known affectionately as Ken, Horne’s life was marked by a commitment to his craft and community, spanning over five decades in the business.
Born on March 14, 1930, in Mitchell, Louisiana, Horne’s family relocated to Gladewater, Texas, shortly after his birth. They later settled in Kilgore during the early stages of the East Texas Oil Boom, a period when housing was scarce. Horne began his education at Kilgore High School, graduating in 1948. He furthered his studies at Kilgore Junior College, earning an Associate of Arts degree in 1950 before enrolling at the University of Texas at Austin to pursue business studies.
Horne’s education was interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served for two years. His military training began at Camp Roberts Military Base in Paso Robles, California, followed by officer candidate school at Fort Benning, Georgia. After completing his service, Horne returned to the University of Texas to finish his degree.
Upon graduation, Horne accepted a position at Sanger Brothers Department Store in Dallas. He worked in the home furnishings and design department as an Assistant Buyer/Manager and excelled in their management training program, graduating first in his class. Horne’s tenure at Sanger Brothers lasted from June 1955 until the spring of 1957, when he returned to Kilgore to join Almands House of Furnishings.
Horne’s connection with Almands House of Furnishings spanned from 1957 until the store’s closure in 1992. Following this, he established his own interior design business, gaining a reputation for excellence across East Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana.
Throughout his career, Horne was actively involved in various professional organizations, including the American Society of Interior Designers and the Better Business Association. His commitment to community service extended to his church affiliations; he was a lifetime member of Marvin Methodist Church and previously a devoted member of St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Kilgore. His contributions included participation in the Marvin Chancel Choir and the adult class at St. Luke’s.
In his personal life, Horne was known for his friendships and community involvement. He is survived by his niece, Susan, and her husband, Kenny Diciolla, as well as his nephew, Brian Gonzales, both residing in Wildomar, California. He also leaves behind a network of relatives and friends who cherished his presence.
A memorial graveside service is scheduled for December 30, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Kilgore City Cemetery. The service will be officiated by Rev. Buddy Powell and Rev. Brandy Stevens, under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home in Tyler.
