Guardians Sign Pedro Avila to Non-Guaranteed Bullpen Deal

The Cleveland Guardians are reportedly signing right-handed pitcher Pedro Avila to a non-guaranteed deal as they prepare for spring training. According to the Miami-based news outlet El Extrabase, Avila has agreed to a split contract that would provide him a prorated Major League Baseball salary if he secures a position on the Guardians’ major league roster or a pre-arranged rate for minor league play. The team has not yet confirmed the agreement.

Reuniting with Avila would bring back a pitcher who previously showcased his capabilities during his time with the Guardians. In 2024, Avila made a significant impact out of the bullpen, appearing in over 50 games and logging more than 70 innings. He recorded a 5-1 record and a 3.25 ERA, striking out 73 batters across 74.2 innings. His ability to pitch multiple innings proved invaluable on several occasions, as noted by manager Stephen Vogt, especially when starting pitchers exited early.

Avila’s most recent season saw him pitch as a starter for the Tokyo Yakult Swallows in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league. He finished with a record of 7-8, a 4.04 ERA, and 61 strikeouts in 82.1 innings. His experience abroad may further enhance his contributions should he return to the Guardians in the upcoming season.

Competition for the Bullpen Spot

Avila will join an increasingly competitive pool of right-handed pitchers aiming to secure a spot in the Guardians’ bullpen this season. Since December, the team has added several players to bolster its pitching depth, including Shawn Armstrong, Colin Holderman, Connor Brogdon, and Rule 5 selection Peyton Pallette. Last week, the Guardians also signed right-hander Codi Heuer to a minor league contract and invited him to participate in spring training.

Despite Avila’s previous contributions, he was notably left off the playoff roster during the 2024 AL Division Series against the Detroit Tigers. Nevertheless, he remained a supportive presence, actively engaging with teammates during their playoff run in games four and five. Avila was later included in the roster for the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees, where he impressed by tossing four scoreless innings over three appearances while allowing just two walks and recording three strikeouts.

As the Guardians look ahead to the 2025 season, Avila’s return could play a critical role in shaping the team’s bullpen strategy, particularly in light of the recent roster changes. His familiarity with the organization and proven track record in high-pressure situations may position him as a key asset as Cleveland aims for a successful campaign.
