Good Shepherd Health Care System in Hermiston has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first health care facility in Oregon to implement the HistoSonics Edison Robotic System for treating liver tumors. The announcement came through a press release detailing that Dr. Kevin Burns, an interventional radiologist at Good Shepherd, successfully performed the first procedure using this pioneering technology in October 2023.
The HistoSonics Edison Robotic System employs a unique sonic beam therapy platform that utilizes a technique known as histotripsy. This innovative treatment leverages ultrasound energy to noninvasively destroy liver tumors, all within a single outpatient procedure. Dr. Burns emphasized the benefits of this technology, stating, “Good Shepherd is the first hospital in the state of Oregon to have the HistoSonics machine to noninvasively destroy liver tumors using ultrasound waves. We’ve already successfully treated many patients here.”
Innovative Treatment with Minimal Impact
One of the standout features of the HistoSonics system is its ability to target tumors without causing damage to surrounding structures. Dr. Burns highlighted, “This technology is pretty unique in that it doesn’t damage the structures around the tumor or in front of the tumor.” This precision makes it a powerful option for patients, as it allows for the treatment of one or multiple tumors within the same session.
The ability to repeat the procedure without lifetime limits is another advantage of the HistoSonics system. “If a new tumor develops or you need another retreatment, that’s absolutely possible,” Dr. Burns added. This flexibility provides a significant benefit for patients, especially those who may face recurring liver tumors.
Currently, Good Shepherd Surgical Services is offering this advanced treatment to patients aged 18 and older. The health care system plans to expand the application of this technology to treat other organs in the future, further enhancing its capabilities in providing cutting-edge medical care.
The introduction of the HistoSonics Edison Robotic System marks a notable advancement in liver cancer treatment options available in Oregon. As Good Shepherd Health Care System continues to innovate, it is poised to lead the way in providing effective, less invasive solutions for patients battling liver tumors.
