Urgent Closure of Angeles Crest Highway Due to Storm Damage

UPDATE: A significant stretch of Angeles Crest Highway in the San Gabriel Mountains remains closed following severe damage from recent storms, officials confirmed today. The closure affects the roadway, also known as Highway 2, and spans from Cedar Springs, approximately 3.3 miles east of Newcomb’s Ranch, to Highway 138.

Photos released by Caltrans reveal extensive destruction at four key locations along the highway, with sections buckled and large chunks of pavement collapsed. The agency is actively assessing the damage, but repairs could take significant time, especially with more storms expected on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

According to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Assistant Director Mike Leum, storm runoff has likely undermined portions of the highway, leading to dangerous collapses. He warned of hazardous icy conditions, noting that a fire engine recently spun out on large patches of ice and required towing to safety.

“It will be a while until the road is repaired,” Leum stated on Instagram. “Drivers should avoid the area due to ongoing safety concerns.”

With a flood watch issued by the National Weather Service for much of Los Angeles County, residents are urged to stay alert and prepared for additional rainfall this week. The conditions may further complicate repair efforts and lead to additional hazards on the road.

The situation is developing, and authorities will continue to provide updates as damage assessments are completed. For now, motorists are advised to seek alternative routes and exercise caution until the highway is deemed safe for travel.

This incident underscores the impact of severe weather on infrastructure and the challenges faced by local agencies in maintaining road safety. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation evolves.
