Putin Orders Urgent Expansion of Ukraine Invasion for 2026

UPDATE: Russian President Vladimir Putin has just announced a significant escalation in the invasion of Ukraine, ordering his military to seize additional territory in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions starting in 2026. This aggressive move comes as a direct challenge to former President Donald Trump‘s ongoing peace negotiations.

During a visit to a frontline command post on Tuesday, military chief General Valery Gerasimov detailed plans for the invasion, describing it as an expansion of a “buffer zone” aimed at pushing Ukrainian forces away from Russia’s border. However, Ukrainian officials argue that this buffer is merely a pretext for deeper incursions into their territory.

Military analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) argue that the so-called buffer zone is intended to place Russian troops within artillery range of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has condemned the Kremlin’s intentions as “mad,” vowing to defend these critical areas with all available resources.

In December 2023, Russia claimed to have captured more than 700 sq km of Ukrainian territory, a figure the ISW disputes, estimating the actual land seized to be closer to 4,700 sq km. The harsh winter conditions have exacerbated the situation for Ukrainian forces, who continue to resist Russian advances in the contested regions of Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson.

This new aggressive strategy appears to be a retaliatory measure following accusations from the Kremlin that Ukraine targeted Putin’s palace in Valdai, a claim Ukraine has firmly denied. The Russian leader even expressed his discontent to Trump regarding these alleged attacks, prompting the former president to respond by emphasizing that he would be “very angry” if the claims were true.

In a recent meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, the two leaders discussed peace negotiations, with Trump asserting significant progress had been made. He stated, “I think we’re doing very well. We could be very close,” highlighting the complexity of the ongoing discussions. Zelenskyy expressed hope that the dialogue would expedite a resolution to the conflict.

Despite Trump’s optimism, Russia has rejected proposals for a ceasefire pushed by European leaders, insisting that any resolution must align with Putin’s ambitions for territorial gains. Moscow is demanding that Ukraine relinquish control over the Donbas region and Crimea, areas that are not fully under Russian control. Zelenskyy has remained steadfast, declaring that he will not concede land to Russia that it does not currently occupy.

As tensions escalate, the international community is left questioning the feasibility of peace as both sides prepare for a protracted conflict. The situation remains fluid, and the world watches closely as developments unfold in this critical geopolitical crisis.
