North Shore Residents Dive into New Year with Polar Plunges

UPDATE: North Shore community members kicked off 2026 with exhilarating polar plunges in Nahant and Swampscott on January 1, drawing over 100 participants to support local charities. Proceeds from these heart-pounding events will benefit My Brother’s Table and the Don Hause Legacy Fund.

At Fisherman’s Beach, the chilling plunge began at 11 a.m., featuring a countdown that ended with the boom of a cannon. The icy water didn’t deter the spirited crowd, eager to honor the late Donald M. Hause, a beloved community member who passed away in September 2024 after a decade-long battle with cancer. His wife, Kimberly Hause, expressed immense gratitude for the community’s support: “My husband was a big part of the community… The impact he had was amazing.”

The event, now in its 20th year, has seen tremendous growth, according to organizer Mike Hartmann. “It started small, but now it’s incredible to see the turnout for such a great cause,” he stated. Fellow participant Kevin Rogers echoed this sentiment, saying, “Every year the event is for a great cause, and this one especially so.”

In Nahant, the annual Freezin’ for a Reason polar plunge launched at noon, raising funds specifically for My Brother’s Table in Lynn. Co-founder Mario Capano highlighted the pressing need for food security, stating, “With all the food instability that’s going on, we picked My Brother’s Table because it’s a great organization.”

The event featured participation from local leaders as well. Lynn Mayor Jared C. Nicholson remarked, “It’s a great tradition… a fun holiday, and a fun way to celebrate for a good reason.” Rep. Sean Reid also praised the initiative, noting that My Brother’s Table does crucial work for many, especially during challenging times.

Participants braved the freezing temperatures, with co-founder George Sonia reflecting on the impact of the plunge: “It’s a fun event that gets bigger each year… starting the New Year by supporting My Brother’s Table is fantastic.”

As the community embraces this tradition, the emotional connection runs deep, with many participants citing the joy of giving back while kicking off the New Year with a refreshing splash. The energy of the crowd was palpable, showcasing the spirit of unity and support for significant local causes.

As additional events are planned for the coming months, community leaders and participants alike are eager to continue their support for those in need.
