Pottsville Boys and North Schuylkill Girls Dominate League Standings

As the Schuylkill League basketball teams prepare for the upcoming playoffs, the boys’ team from Pottsville and the girls’ team from North Schuylkill are leading their respective divisions. With the league playoffs set to commence on February 7, 2024, both teams are aiming for strong postseason performances.

Pottsville leads the boys’ division with an impressive record of 8-3 overall and 5-0 in Division I. The team has shown remarkable form, winning five of their last six games, including a decisive 54-35 victory over North Schuylkill on December 15. Christian Alvarez has been a standout player, averaging 17.3 points per game, while Ryder Bowers and Dave Kunstek contribute with averages of 10.3 and 9.4 points respectively.

Minersville follows closely, holding a record of 8-1 with a 4-1 standing in Division I. Their only defeat came in a 62-51 loss to Pottsville on December 11. Shazier Bethea has emerged as a key player, scoring 21 points in a recent win over Williams Valley on December 22.

In the girls’ division, North Schuylkill remains undefeated at 6-2 overall and 5-0 in league play. The Spartans started strong with victories over Panther Valley and Pine Grove. Mya Conti, Gianna Capone, and Monica Selgrade have been instrumental in driving the team’s success. Their recent loss to State College on December 30 marked a challenging point, but they look to rebound in their next match against Schuylkill Haven on January 6.

Schuylkill Haven’s girls’ team is also making a significant impact this season, with a record of 7-3 and 5-0 in Division I. McKenna Runkle leads the Hurricanes with an average of 13.8 points per game. Following their recent loss to Marian on January 2, the team aims to regain its winning momentum.

As the season progresses, the District 11 playoffs will begin on February 14, followed by the PIAA state playoffs starting on February 28. Teams are keenly aware of the stakes, and the competition is expected to intensify as they vie for the championship titles.

Other notable teams include Tri-Valley, who remains undefeated in Division II with a record of 9-1 and 5-0 in their league, and Mahanoy Area, which also holds a strong position at 7-1 and 5-0 in Division II.
