San Diego Launches Urgent Shelter Program for Homeless Tonight

URGENT UPDATE: The city of San Diego has activated its inclement weather shelter program for the homeless tonight, responding to critical weather conditions. The San Diego Housing Commission has confirmed that the program will be available as temperatures drop below 50 degrees with a significant chance of rain.

The shelter program operates from November through March and is designed to provide safe accommodations during severe weather. Tonight, individuals experiencing homelessness can access additional shelter capacity at three key locations:

– **Living Water Church of the Nazarene**: Located at 1550 Market St.**, this site can accommodate up to 28 adults. Check-in starts at 8 p.m. with on-site reservations available from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and check-out by 6:30 a.m. the following day.

– **Joan Kroc Center**: Situated at 1501 Imperial Ave., this facility offers beds for up to 61 adults, plus 11 additional beds for families with minor children and/or single women. Check-in begins at 4 p.m. and continues throughout the night until full, with check-out at 5 a.m..

– **Father Joe’s Villages Paul Mirabile Center**: Also at 1501 Imperial Ave., this center has a capacity for 62 adults. Check-in starts at 4 p.m. and remains open until full, with check-out at 5 a.m..

Individuals are encouraged to go directly to these locations for a bed on a first-come, first-served basis. The program is activated under specific conditions: when temperatures are below 50 degrees with a 40% chance of rain, or when temperatures hit 45 degrees or lower, regardless of rain predictions. Special measures are also taken during extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall or strong winds.

These shelters represent a critical lifeline for vulnerable populations during harsh weather conditions. The immediate activation of this program underscores the city’s commitment to protecting its homeless residents as winter approaches.
