Clemson University Premieres Its First Feature Film on February 6

Clemson University is set to make history with the premiere of its first feature film, “Student Film: The Movie,” on February 6, 2025. This groundbreaking project, which showcases the talents of students and faculty alike, is the result of an innovative film production course and a grant from the South Carolina Film Commission. The film will debut at the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts, with festivities commencing at 17:00 before the screening at 18:45.

The narrative centers on the journey of a fledgling college film program at a fictional state university, reflecting the experiences of many students navigating their own creative paths. The screenplay was penned by South Carolina native Julia Fowler, who also directed the film. Fowler, known for her work on Netflix’s “Country Comfort” and the YouTube series “Southern Women Channel,” collaborated closely with Clemson students, many of whom were acting for the first time.

In the production, students took on vital roles, gaining hands-on experience in both creative and technical aspects of filmmaking. This immersive approach was highlighted by Sam Sokolow, a two-time Emmy Award-nominated producer and current Professor of Practice in the World Cinema program. “Students working shoulder-to-shoulder with industry professionals to make a feature film is the gold standard of experiential learning,” Sokolow stated, emphasizing the importance of practical experience in education.

Collaboration with Industry Professionals

The film’s production involved a rich collaboration between Clemson students and a team of seasoned professionals. The educational crew included notable figures such as Nicholas Levis from BrandCinema, Geoff Herbert, known for his work on “The Irishman” and “The Hunger Games,” and several others who contributed their expertise to guide the students through the filmmaking process.

A diverse cast comprised of both emerging talent and recognized actors enhances the film’s appeal. Featured alongside the student actors are veterans of film and television, including Finesse Mitchell from “Saturday Night Live,” Brett Rice, who appeared in “Forrest Gump,” and Matthew Settle from “Gossip Girl.” This blend of fresh faces and established names offers a dynamic viewing experience.

Sokolow remarked on the forward-looking approach of the program, stating, “We’re not teaching Clemson students how things used to be done; we’re training them to thrive in the industry they are going to be a part of in their careers.” This commitment to modern filmmaking practices positions Clemson’s World Cinema program as a significant player in the evolving landscape of film education.

Filming took place during the summer of 2025 across various locations in the City of Clemson, including the Allen N. Reeves Football Complex. The hands-on experience provided students with invaluable insights into the complexities of film production.
