White House Appoints Dr. Ali Sha’ath to Lead Interim Gaza Government

The White House announced on March 15, 2024, the appointment of Dr. Ali Sha’ath as the leader of a proposed interim government in the Gaza Strip, contingent on the relinquishment of control by Hamas. Dr. Sha’ath, a previously low-profile figure, has served as the deputy minister of transportation within the Palestinian Authority. His leadership is intended to pave the way for a “technocratic” administration focused on stabilizing the region.

In a statement, the White House characterized Dr. Sha’ath as “a widely respected technocratic leader.” His responsibilities will include overseeing the restoration of essential public services and the rebuilding of civil institutions in Gaza. The administration emphasized that he would work to stabilize daily life while laying the groundwork for a self-sustaining governance structure.

The announcement highlighted Dr. Sha’ath’s extensive experience in public administration, economic development, and international relations. His pragmatic approach and understanding of Gaza’s institutional challenges were noted as key factors in his selection.

Formation of the Board of Peace

Alongside Dr. Sha’ath’s appointment, the White House introduced seven members of the newly established Board of Peace. This board will be chaired by President Trump and includes prominent figures such as former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Other members include Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank, deputy national security adviser Robert Gabriel, and Marc Rowan, CEO of Apollo Global Management.

The White House stated that each board member will manage specific portfolios critical to Gaza’s long-term stabilization and success. Areas of focus will include governance capacity-building, regional relations, reconstruction, and capital mobilization.

In addition to the board members, Nickolay Mladenov, a former Bulgarian member of the European Parliament, will act as the High Representative for Gaza. His role will be to serve as a liaison between the Board of Peace and the transitional government.

International Stabilization Force

The White House also announced the formation of an International Stabilization Force to assist in peacekeeping efforts in Gaza. The mission will be led by Major General Jasper Jeffers, commander of U.S. Special Operations Command Central. The force will comprise troop contributions from various regional countries, which have yet to be specified.

The establishment of an interim government and a stabilizing force marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to restore order and governance in Gaza. The international community’s involvement through the Board of Peace and the stabilization force reflects a commitment to addressing the complex challenges facing the region.

As these developments unfold, the world will be watching closely to see how the new leadership and international support will impact the lives of those in Gaza, aiming for a future marked by stability and self-governance.
