Ruby Ericson Crowned 2026 Klondike Kate at Winter Carnival Contest

On January 7, 2026, Ruby Ericson from White Bear Lake was named the new Klondike Kate during the annual competition held at the Inwood Oaks Event Center in Oakdale, Minnesota. This title, which celebrates the spirit of the Winter Carnival, is inspired by the real-life entertainer Kathleen Rockwell, who captivated audiences during the Gold Rush era.

In a lively performance, Ericson showcased her vocal talent with a powerful rendition of “Bring on the Men” from the 1990 musical Jekyll & Hyde. The audience, comprising several hundred attendees, responded enthusiastically, setting the stage for her victory as the 2026 mistress of fun and frivolity.

Competition Highlights and Judging

This year’s contest featured four finalists, each vying for the coveted title. A panel of nine judges, including former Klondike Kates and local musicians such as Wayne Hamilton and Cate Fierro, determined the winner. KSTP-TV anchor Matt Belanger emceed the event, while musical director Dave Swanson provided live piano accompaniment.

Ericson, a member of the women’s singing group Sweet Adelines International since 1987, expressed her joy at winning after competing for three consecutive years. The runners-up included Kat Connery, a voice actor and fiber artist, and Bonnie Lopez from West St. Paul. First-time competitor Ericka Golden, though eliminated before the final round, impressed the crowd with her performances of classic rock songs.

Ruby Ericson’s Journey

In an exclusive interview after her victory, Ericson reflected on her passion for singing and the significance of the Klondike Kate title in her life. She described the stage as a second home, sharing the experience with fellow competitors she considers family.

“I love being onstage,” Ericson said. “The gals that I was singing with tonight are so like family, so it’s fun to share the stage with them.” Her journey toward this title began in childhood, inspired by the iconic entertainer Mae West. “When I was six years old, I thought that would be someone fun to emulate,” she recalled, highlighting her deep connection to the St. Paul Winter Carnival.

Singing plays a vital role in Ericson’s life, providing a source of comfort and joy. “It frees my soul and takes me out of my shell,” she explained. “When I have moments of sadness, music just lifts me.”

Looking ahead, Ericson expressed her aspirations for the upcoming year. “I would love to inspire young ladies to take on this challenge and become Klondike Kate, too, or even pursue a career in music. I want them to follow their dream, whatever it is.”

The 2026 St. Paul Winter Carnival is set to begin on January 22, promising a season of celebration and community spirit. As the newly crowned Klondike Kate, Ericson is poised to lead the festivities, embodying the joy and excitement of this cherished tradition.
