“Sherlock Holmes: The Great Detective” Debuts at Walnut Street Theatre

“Sherlock Holmes: The Great Detective” has premiered at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, running until February 15, 2024. This new theatrical production promises a blend of thrilling adventures and comedy, taking audiences on a journey through iconic European locations, including Switzerland, London, France, and Luxembourg.

Bill Van Horn, who serves as the actor, director, and writer for the play, describes the style of the production as “madcap” and filled with humor. The title role is played by Harry Smith, who notes that Holmes takes on various personas throughout the performance due to his mastery of disguise. “The props, like Holmes’ pipe, create instant character,” Smith explains, highlighting the importance of visual elements in portraying the legendary detective.

At the heart of the story lies the dynamic relationship between Sherlock Holmes and his steadfast companion, Dr. Watson. Van Horn portrays Dr. Watson, who serves as a vital support for Holmes, despite often finding himself in need of rescue as well. “What I was interested in as a writer was the relationship between Watson and Holmes as they got older,” says Van Horn. The narrative is adapted from two stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, with the first act focusing on Holmes’ apparent “demise,” while the second act sees him re-entering Watson’s life as they tackle crime together once more.

The theme of friendship resonates strongly throughout the performance, according to Van Horn. The cast comprises six actors, each taking on multiple roles. Actor Mary Martello portrays Mrs. Hudson, the iconic landlady at 221B Baker Street. Martello describes her character as fearless, while also playing the antagonist Colonel Sebastian Moran, who she characterizes as a formidable foe, albeit not as dangerous as Holmes’ arch-nemesis, Moriarty.

Smith elaborates on the character of Moriarty, stating that Holmes views capturing him as his legacy. “He enjoys getting the better of his adversaries,” he remarks, emphasizing the intensity of their rivalry.
