Darkstar Theater in Tempe to Close January 31 After Four Years

Darkstar Theater, a notable nightclub and music venue in downtown Tempe, will close its doors on January 31, 2024, after nearly four years of operation. This venue, which has served as a hub for electronic dance music (EDM) enthusiasts, is located within the historic Tempe National Bank building, currently under the city’s acquisition process.

In a statement shared on social media, Darkstar announced its decision not to renew its lease due to the impending sale of the property. The announcement cited, “Despite our best efforts, we were unable to make it work long term.” This closure means that all DJ events scheduled for February and later will be relocated to other local venues, including those managed by Relentless Beats. While specific venues for these events have yet to be confirmed, Darkstar indicated that further details will be provided in the weeks to come.

During its tenure, Darkstar hosted numerous events featuring popular DJs and producers, including Gabriel & Dresden and Mark Farina. With over a dozen events still planned through May, the venue quickly became a favorite spot for local EDM fans after its debut in 2022. The theater emerged following the closure of Shady Park, another venue owned by Scott Price, which halted operations amidst a legal dispute.

Plans for the Tempe National Bank Building

The closure of Darkstar coincides with the Tempe City Council’s approval of the purchase of the 114-year-old Tempe National Bank building and an adjacent historic property from the Calgary-based firm Wexford Developments. The council voted unanimously on January 8, 2024, to authorize the acquisition, which is part of a broader effort to preserve the city’s historical sites and enhance downtown attractions.

Scott Price, who also owns Mill Avenue clubs C.A.S.A. Tempe and Sunbar, expressed his support for the city’s plans. He noted, “I wholly support the sale of these buildings so they can be protected and become new attractions for our downtown.” His vision reflects a commitment to revitalizing the area while preserving its history.

A Fond Farewell to Darkstar Theater

In their farewell message, Darkstar expressed gratitude to its patrons and staff, stating, “These past four years have been an amazing ride. We are so grateful for every artist, staff member, and patron that have made it all possible. Thank you for dancing with us.”

As the venue prepares for its final days, EDM fans and local patrons are left with memories of vibrant nights filled with music and dance. Darkstar’s closure marks the end of a significant chapter in Tempe’s nightlife, leaving a void in the local music scene that will be felt by many.
