Minnesota CEOs Urge De-Escalation Following Fatal Shooting

Leaders from over 60 Minnesota-based companies, including CEOs of the Mayo Clinic and Hormel, have signed a letter calling for an immediate de-escalation of tensions following the fatal shooting of a man by federal Border Patrol agents. The letter, organized by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, was released on January 25, 2024, one day after the incident that resulted in the death of 37-year-old Alex Pretti from Minneapolis.

The shooting occurred on January 24, near Nicollet Avenue and West 26th Street, and was captured on video by several bystanders. This incident marked the third shooting by federal agents in just three weeks within Minneapolis, raising concerns about public safety and community relations. Prior incidents included the shooting of Renee Good on January 7 and another man being shot in the leg on January 14.

In the letter, the business leaders stated, “With yesterday’s tragic news, we are calling for an immediate de-escalation of tensions and for state, local and federal officials to work together to find real solutions.” Among the prominent signatories are Dr. Gianrico Farrugia of Mayo Clinic, Jeff Ettinger of Hormel, William Brown from 3M, Stephen J. Hemsley of UnitedHealth, and Michael Fiddelke, the incoming CEO of Target.

Calls for Collaborative Solutions

The letter expressed concern over the “widespread disruption and tragic loss of life” resulting from the recent violence. It highlighted the ongoing efforts by the business community to engage with federal, state, and local officials to address the underlying issues. These efforts include communication with the governor’s office, the White House, and local mayors.

On January 25, 2024, Vice President J.D. Vance visited Minnesota to participate in a roundtable discussion focused on restoring law and order in the state. The business leaders emphasized the need for cooperative approaches, stating, “There are ways for us to come together to foster progress.”

The letter concluded with a call for peace and collaboration, urging local, state, and federal leaders to achieve solutions that allow families and businesses across Minnesota to resume their activities. “In this difficult moment for our community, we call for peace and focused cooperation among local, state and federal leaders to achieve a swift and durable solution,” the letter stated.

The ongoing dialogue reflects a growing concern within the business community regarding public safety and the need for effective governance to foster a stable environment for residents and businesses alike.
