Bishop Brossart’s basketball team achieved a significant victory on Friday, defeating Scott 83-74 in a closely contested match held in Taylor Mill. The win was crucial for the Mustangs as they moved one step closer to clinching the No. 1 seed in the 37th District tournament, improving their record to 9-9 for the season. This game, part of the LINK nky Game of the Week presented by Mr. Kentucky and Skyline Chili, showcased the team’s resilience and determination.
The Mustangs’ performance was highlighted by two remarkable halfcourt buzzer beaters—one from Drew Steffen at the end of the first quarter and another from Brady Boruske to close out the second quarter. These dramatic moments encapsulated the energy of the night and set the tone for Brossart’s offensive onslaught.
Balanced Scoring Leads the Way
A key factor in Brossart’s success was a balanced scoring effort. All five starters contributed significantly, with Carson Hesse leading the charge with 23 points, including 13 in the first half. Following him were Steffen with 15 points, Nick Cozzi with 14, Boruske with 13, and Beckett Kuntz adding 12. Hesse’s physical play was particularly notable, as he emphasized his strategy of using height and speed to gain an advantage on the court.
“Getting downhill, ripping low and using my height and speed to my advantage,” Hesse explained after the game. “It’s a big game, so it definitely boosts my physicality.”
Despite a strong start from Scott, who held an 18-16 lead after the first quarter, Brossart took control by halftime, leading 36-30. They continued to build on this advantage, entering the final quarter with a 56-50 lead, ultimately finishing the game by outscoring Scott 27-24 in the fourth.
Challenges for Scott
On the other side, Scott faced difficulties in execution despite thorough preparation, according to their head coach, Steve Frommeyer. “We needed to get stops, and we weren’t,” he remarked. “We worked three days on prepping, but at the end of the day, you’ve got to be able to execute.” The Eagles’ defense faltered, allowing Brossart to capitalize and score crucial points in the final moments.
Scott was led by Ty Cook, who scored 17 points before sustaining an injury in the second half that sidelined him for the remainder of the game. Other notable contributions came from Ben Brown with 15 points, Jayden Dodd with 13, and Jordan Clemons with 11. The Eagles’ loss dropped their record to 11-8, and they will face Holmes next on Saturday at 17:00.
As Brossart prepares for their next game against Calvary Christian on February 3, the team remains focused on their goal of securing the top seed in the district. Head coach Ben Franzen expressed optimism, stating, “Our first goal is to make it to the All ‘A’ state, something that we weren’t able to achieve. But because of the Campbell win, even after losing in the All ‘A,’ we still have this goal in front of us that’s attainable.”
The Mustangs’ scoring breakdown reflects their strong showing: Brossart made 3 three-pointers and shot effectively from the free-throw line, converting 26 of 33 attempts. In contrast, Scott managed to hit 7 three-pointers and made 14 of 18 free throws. The physicality of the game was evident, with both teams accumulating a high number of fouls—Brossart with 20 and Scott with 24.
As the district tournament approaches, both teams will be looking to refine their strategies. For Brossart, the path to the top seed is clear, while Scott will need to regroup and address their defensive lapses to reclaim their competitive edge.
