MLB Average Salary Surges to $4.72M, Increase Slows to 1.4%

BREAKING: Major League Baseball’s (MLB) average salary has hit a record high of $4,721,393 for 2025, but the rate of increase has notably slowed to just 1.4%, according to the latest figures released by the Players’ Association. This marks the smallest growth since a four-year decline prior to 2022, raising concerns among players and fans alike.

This slowdown follows a significant rebound in salaries, which saw an increase of 7.2% in 2023 and 14.8% in 2022, following a 99-day lockout that led to a new five-year collective bargaining agreement. The current agreement is set to expire on December 1, and the looming possibility of another lockout has players worried about future earnings.

The latest data reveals that since a low of $3.68 million in 2021, the average salary has surged by 28.3% over the past four seasons, averaging an impressive 7.1% annual increase. However, the recent figures raise questions about the sustainability of this growth amid ongoing negotiations.

The Players’ Association’s analysis includes salaries, earned bonuses, and prorated signing bonuses for 1,046 players on active rosters and injured lists as of August 31. Notably, MLB’s own figures may differ slightly due to variations in methodology, particularly as salaries fluctuate from opening day to the end of the season due to roster changes.

Looking at the salary breakdown, players with less than one year of major league service averaged $822,589, while those with one to two years earned around $1,179,192. For arbitration-eligible players with two to three years of service, the average salary reached $1,833,386.

The arbitration-eligible averages show notable disparities: players with three-plus years averaged $3,273,039, while those with four-plus years earned $3,932,847. Players nearing free-agent eligibility, with six to seven years of service, averaged $9,649,380, and those with 11 to 12 years reached a peak of $22,034,231.

As the deadline for the current collective bargaining agreement approaches, all eyes are on MLB and the Players’ Association. Fans and players alike are anxious to see how negotiations will unfold and what impact they will have on future salaries and the overall landscape of professional baseball.

Stay tuned as we continue to monitor this developing story and its implications for the league and its players.
