Monroe Triumphs Over Dougherty for Region 1-AAA Championship

Monroe High School secured the Region 1-AAA championship title on March 15, 2024, defeating crosstown rival Dougherty 72-61 in a fiercely contested game at Westover High School. This victory marks another successful season for the Golden Tornadoes, who have become accustomed to standing atop the region.

A Strong Start and Strategic Play

The game, held at the iconic Boston Garden, was characterized by its intensity and emotional energy. Dougherty initially surged ahead with a strong start, leading 13-5, thanks to a three-pointer from freshman Micah Joyner. Monroe’s head coach, Michael Hoffpauir, quickly called for a timeout to regroup his players.

By the end of the first quarter, Monroe had leveled the score at 15-15, highlighted by a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Isaiah Rivers. As the second quarter unfolded, Monroe’s defense began to take control, allowing them to establish a more commanding tempo on the court. A long three-pointer by Tristen Terry gave Monroe a 26-17 lead, prompting Dougherty’s coach, Terrance Noel, to slow the pace of play.

Monroe entered halftime with a solid 33-25 lead, but both teams knew the game was far from over.

Foul Trouble and Resilience

The third quarter presented a test of composure for both teams. Monroe extended its lead to 48-37 following a goaltending call and a technical foul that awarded them free throws. However, foul trouble soon plagued both sides, forcing key players from the game. Terry, along with teammates Brayden Burns and Elijah Rivers, found themselves with four fouls each.

Despite these challenges, Dougherty capitalized on Monroe’s struggles, with Marcus Heath hitting a corner three-pointer to cut the deficit to just two points at 52-50. The atmosphere inside the packed gymnasium intensified as Monroe’s lead began to slip away.

In response, Monroe regained its footing. Isaiah Rivers scored through contact, completing a three-point play that reinvigorated the team. A fast-break layup from Burns allowed Monroe to close the third quarter with a 59-50 lead, even as Terry fouled out.

The fourth quarter was dominated by free throws, with both teams frequently sent to the line. Burns led Monroe with a total of 20 points, 12 of which came from the charity stripe. The Tornadoes maintained their composure, answering every challenge Dougherty presented. Dougherty’s Heath scored an impressive 26 points, showcasing his skill in driving to the basket and shooting from the perimeter.

Despite the best efforts from Dougherty, Monroe’s experience and resilience shone through, securing their place as champions of the region once again.

As the game concluded, both teams now await the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) to release the upcoming state playoff brackets. If Monroe can carry the determination and teamwork displayed in this championship game into the playoffs, they may continue to make a significant impact in the postseason.

With this victory, the Golden Tornadoes not only affirmed their dominance in the region but also showed their ability to adapt and thrive despite adversity.
