Amazon’s Fire TV Stick Sticks to Outdated Micro-USB Power Port

Amazon has introduced several new models of its Fire TV Stick series, including the recently launched Fire TV Stick 4K Select and the updated Fire TV Stick HD, both hitting the market in fall 2024. These devices are designed to offer an accessible streaming experience, providing users with fast access to nearly two million movies and TV episodes, along with features like Alexa voice control. However, despite these upgrades, the Fire TV Stick series remains tethered to an outdated technology: the micro-USB port for power.

As of 2026, every model in the Fire TV Stick lineup, including the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and Fire TV Stick 4K Max, continues to utilize the micro-USB connection. This choice stands out in a time when USB-C has become the global standard for charging and connectivity across a range of devices, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops. The USB-C connector is not only reversible, making it more user-friendly, but it also supports faster data transfer speeds and higher power delivery—up to 100 watts compared to the 9-15 watts offered by micro-USB.

The presence of micro-USB in the Fire TV Stick series is particularly notable given its diminishing relevance in the broader electronics market. Today, micro-USB is primarily found in older Android devices and some budget accessories, further emphasizing the Fire TV Stick’s reliance on outdated technology. While this does not directly impact the streaming quality or performance for everyday users, it does raise questions about the device’s alignment with current technological standards.

There is a notable exception within Amazon’s streaming device family: the Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen). Unlike its stick counterparts, the Cube features a dedicated power port, as well as HDMI 2.1 input and output, USB-A 2.0, and an Ethernet port. This device also supports advanced features such as 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Vision, and Wi-Fi 6E, making it a more sophisticated and pricier alternative for those looking to enhance their home theater setups.

Despite the Fire TV Stick’s promise of delivering a smart and powerful upgrade for home entertainment, the persistent use of micro-USB does feel out of place in today’s tech landscape. As USB-C continues to dominate the market, consumers may wonder if Amazon will adapt its product line to meet modern expectations. For now, those loyal to the Fire TV Stick can enjoy its familiar features, but may have to accept its outdated power connection as part of the package.
