UPDATE: The Hobart Library is actively hosting its popular “Read to a Dog” program, providing school-aged children a unique opportunity to read and interact with trained comfort dogs. This initiative is designed to create a calming environment for kids, especially after a long week of school.
Just announced by branch manager Jo Bonner, the program aims to help children engage with the furry companions during Friday sessions held after school hours. “The dogs are all LCC (Lutheran Church Charities) K-9 Comfort Dogs, calm and well-behaved,” Bonner emphasized, highlighting the importance of these interactions.
During a recent session, four-year-old Liam Rogers of Hobart eagerly read to Michael, a five-year-old comfort dog. With his parents, Eric and Melissa Rogers, looking on, Liam shared his excitement: “He’s so soft. I think he likes me,” as he introduced himself to Michael.
The Read to a Dog program not only fosters literacy but also promotes emotional well-being. Dan Fulkerson, a trainer and volunteer with LCC, stated, “When you pet an animal, your heart rate goes down, your blood pressure goes down, and that leads to relaxation.” This positive feedback from parents underscores the program’s impact on children’s anxiety levels, particularly during stressful periods like exams.
Fulkerson and his canine partner travel to various locations, including nursing homes and hospitals, to provide comfort and companionship. “Last year, we visited a local high school the week before students took their end-of-semester final exams,” he noted, demonstrating the program’s broader community involvement.
The initiative is supported by Lutheran Church Charities, based in Northbrook, Illinois, which has affiliates in 27 states. Local community Lutheran churches own the dogs and manage their care through a special fund. Fulkerson, along with other volunteers from Trinity Lutheran Church, has completed extensive training to ensure both he and Michael are well-prepared for their roles.
Parents like Melissa Rogers find great value in the program. “We come to the library regularly, and Liam always enjoys it here,” she shared. “When we heard about the Read to a Dog session, we thought this would be a good experience for him.”
As the program continues to grow, more families are encouraged to participate and experience the comforting presence of these amazing dogs. The next session will take place this coming Friday, promising another opportunity for children to engage in reading while fostering a sense of calm and companionship.
Stay tuned for more updates on community events and programs at the Hobart Library, as they continue to create safe and enriching experiences for families.
