BREAKING: Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has just announced a massive $659 million expansion plan for its data center complex outside Memphis, Tennessee. The company is seeking permits to construct a new four-story facility that will span approximately 312,000 square feet adjacent to its existing Colossus 2 data center.
Documents filed with the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development reveal that the new building will stand about 75 feet high. Specific details regarding the building’s function remain undisclosed, but the development underscores xAI’s rapid growth in the AI sector, particularly as it powers its flagship large language model, Grok.
The proposed site is located on a 79-acre parcel at 5414 Tulane Road, next to the Colossus 2 data center, which began operations in January 2025. This expansion comes as xAI continues to enhance its infrastructure, aiming to provide unprecedented computing power. Musk previously stated that the broader Memphis campus could eventually deliver around 2 gigawatts of compute power.
Authorities confirm that this initiative is part of a larger commitment to bolster power infrastructure in the region. During a recent White House event, Gwynne Shotwell, President of SpaceX, announced plans for xAI to develop 1.2 gigawatts of power for its supercomputing facility, a move seen as vital for supporting both the new building and existing operations.
“As you know, xAI builds huge supercomputers and data centers, and we build them fast,” Shotwell stated. She emphasized the importance of this new power source, which will also help stabilize the electrical grid in the Memphis area. “We will build new substations and invest in electrical infrastructure to provide stability to the area’s grid,” she added.
Moreover, Shotwell highlighted plans to enhance the region’s water supply through cutting-edge infrastructure. “We will build state-of-the-art water recycling plants that will protect approximately 4.7 billion gallons of water from the Memphis aquifer each year,” she said. This initiative is expected to create thousands of jobs for local residents across the Tennessee-Mississippi border.
As xAI forges ahead with its expansion plans, the implications for the local economy and technological advancements are significant. The expansion not only represents a substantial financial investment but is also poised to support thousands of jobs, enhancing the economic landscape of the Memphis region.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as xAI continues to redefine the capabilities of artificial intelligence and its applications. This urgent expansion is set to mark a pivotal moment in the tech industry, and its ripple effects will be felt far beyond Tennessee.
