Mary Ruth Ingleby, a cherished educator and advocate, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 18, 2025, at the age of 75. Her death followed a long and challenging battle with Alzheimer’s Disease, a condition that profoundly affected her final years. Born on June 22, 1950, in Salt Lake City, she was the third of six children in the family of Don and Lavon Ingleby.
Ingleby’s early life was marked by significant events that shaped her future. At the age of 16, she made the heart-wrenching decision to give up her first child for adoption. This experience deeply influenced her commitment to education, particularly in early childhood. After earning an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Cabrillo College, Ingleby dedicated many years to teaching children between the ages of three and five. Notably, her second son, Damian, was among her students and developed a lifelong passion for reading and learning.
For over five decades, Ingleby called Santa Cruz her home, where her love for the ocean and the beach flourished. Her compassion extended beyond education; she was a fervent defender of animal rights and minority causes, investing considerable time and resources into these efforts. Ingleby also embraced her artistic side, participating in various choirs and musical duos throughout her life. Music was a constant presence in her home, enriching the lives of those around her.
In her later years, Ingleby was grateful to reconnect with her first child, Bill. They formed a meaningful bond and spent valuable time together before his untimely passing in his mid-30s. She is survived by her second son, Damian, and her younger sister, Colette.
A memorial gathering to celebrate Ingleby’s life will take place at Seacliff State Beach on October 18, 2025, at 12:00 PM. Those wishing to attend can call 406-552-9696 for more information or email [email protected].
Mary Ingleby’s legacy as a passionate educator, animal advocate, and loving family member will be remembered by all who knew her.
