Evanston Animal Shelter’s Art Fundraiser Boosts Adoption Efforts

UPDATE: The Evanston Animal Shelter is making headlines today with a groundbreaking fundraiser that merges animal welfare and local art! On July 15, 2023, the shelter hosted “The Love of Animals Art Show,” showcasing over 30 local artists and aiming to boost adoptions and support for animals in need.

The event, held at the shelter’s newly opened facility, featured a diverse range of artistic expressions, with many artists donating between 50% to 100% of their sales back to the shelter. Anna Marie Crovetti, the exhibit coordinator, emphasized the enthusiasm of Evanston’s creative community, stating, “They all wanted to jump in to make a difference for the animals.”

One artist, Kristin Conneely, expressed her passion for the cause, sharing her personal connection as a rescue dog owner. “Rescue is the way to go,” she said, highlighting the joy her Lab-Shepherd mix has brought to her family since her adoption during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conneely’s artwork, including a stunning mosaic portrait of her dog, captivated attendees, showcasing the emotional bond between pets and their owners.

The event was designed to stir excitement, with a unique twist: each time an artist made a sale, a bell was rung at the shelter, eliciting cheers from the crowd. Lisa Degliantoni, who helped manage payments, noted that the ringing bell created an uplifting atmosphere and encouraged sales. “This fundraiser is an accessible way for the community to support the shelter,” she said.

The new facility, which opened in 2024, is more than three times the size of the previous shelter, allowing for increased community engagement and a more inviting space for potential adopters. Crovetti believes this fundraiser is a vital step toward building relationships within the community, stating, “It’s a giant, inclusive, amazing community that really steps up when we need it.”

The success of this inaugural event has sparked hopes that it will become an annual tradition, bridging the gap between local artistry and animal welfare in Evanston. As the shelter continues to promote adoptions and artist participation, this event marks a significant moment for both the animals and the vibrant community surrounding them.
