Hastings Museum Launches Revamped Kool-Aid Exhibit to Celebrate Heritage

The Hastings Museum has officially unveiled its newly renovated “Discover the Dream” exhibit, which pays tribute to the iconic beverage Kool-Aid and its inventor, Edwin Perkins. The grand opening occurred this past weekend, offering community members an opportunity to engage with the vibrant, interactive display that highlights Hastings’ historical connection to Kool-Aid, from its inception to the present day.

On Thursday evening, family members of Perkins, state representatives, local officials, and major donors gathered for an exclusive preview of the exhibit. The museum held a members-only celebration on Saturday, preceding the public opening on Sunday. The updated exhibit features immersive displays designed to enhance visitor engagement, including interactive elements where guests can “shop” in a General Store, “work” in a Kool-Aid factory, and even share personal memories on a digital Share Your Memories Wall.

Lieutenant Governor Joe Kelly, who attended the opening, emphasized the significance of community support for cultural institutions. “You take something that’s very good and outstanding to begin with — this facility — and you keep improving it,” he stated. His remarks highlighted the importance of public and private funding in sustaining such initiatives.

Local leaders also expressed their enthusiasm for the museum’s contributions to Hastings. State Senator Dan Lonowski reminisced about his visits to the museum with his children and grandchildren, praising the continuous updates that keep the museum fresh and engaging. “It’s amazing… there’s always something new that’s been added or updated,” he said. Hastings Mayor Jay Beckby noted the museum’s role in attracting visitors who contribute to the local economy, recalling his own childhood experiences with various exhibits.

Originally opened in 2002, the “Discover the Dream” exhibit chronicles Perkins’ journey in creating Kool-Aid, which began as a small mail-order business and grew into a global brand. The previous iteration of the exhibit presented the story in a linear format, which some visitors found confusing. Museum Director Teresa Kreutzer-Hodson acknowledged that efforts to clarify the exhibit’s focus on Kool-Aid did not resonate with all visitors.

The redesigned exhibit, now located on the second floor, features vibrant graphics and enhanced storytelling. It showcases new artifacts, including a recently added Kool-Aid Man, and offers a more accessible layout that encourages exploration. Kreutzer-Hodson explained the strategic shift, stating, “They’re looking for Kool-Aid. Let’s give them Kool-Aid. And then once they’re in there, you’re going to learn about Edwin and find that story that we’ve always told.”

Funding for the exhibit’s renovation was made possible through significant community support, including contributions from the Kitty M. Perkins Foundation and Hastings Museum Foundation donors. In total, 494 donors raised over $896,000 for the project, reflecting strong community engagement in preserving local history.

The newly reimagined Kool-Aid exhibit marks the first phase of a larger effort to modernize the Hastings Museum. Future plans include improving accessibility and updating displays throughout the second floor. The museum’s collection, which includes over 51,000 objects and extensive archival materials, will benefit from a new centralized storage area designed to protect and showcase these important artifacts.

As the museum prepares for upcoming projects, including a permanent exhibit on the Naval Ammunition Depot, the community can look forward to a range of enhancements that will deepen their understanding of Hastings’ rich history. The museum’s efforts align with the upcoming 100th anniversary of Kool-Aid in March 2027, a milestone highlighted by the drink’s current owner, Kraft Heinz Company. They expressed pride in Kool-Aid’s local roots and appreciation for the museum’s commitment to honoring Perkins’ legacy.

In conclusion, the revamped Kool-Aid exhibit not only celebrates a beloved beverage but also strengthens Hastings’ cultural identity, ensuring that future generations can appreciate the story of Edwin Perkins and his iconic creation.
