Potosi Trojans Rally Past Bayless to Claim District Title, 57-53

UPDATE: The Potosi Trojans have claimed the Class 4, District 2 boys basketball championship with a thrilling 57-53 victory over the Bayless Bronchos on Saturday evening in Potosi. This hard-fought win marks Potosi’s second consecutive district title, solidifying their comeback after a shaky start.

After losing key players, including 2,000-point scorer Carter Whitley, Potosi faced skepticism entering the game. Bayless stormed out to an impressive 15-point lead in the first quarter, leaving the Trojans struggling. However, fueled by relentless defensive pressure, Potosi turned the tide in the second half.

Sophomore guard Rhenn Mapes was pivotal, scoring nine points in the final four minutes and finishing with 22 points overall. “We faced a lot of criticism coming into the season without Carter… it means a whole lot winning a district championship my senior year,” said senior forward Peyton Rowe, who contributed 17 points to the effort.

The game saw a staggering 21 turnovers forced by Potosi, allowing them to outscore Bayless 20-9 in the final quarter. The Trojans now carry a five-game winning streak into their upcoming state sectional rematch against Dexter on Tuesday at Farmington High School.

Bayless, who entered the game with confidence after upsetting Ste. Genevieve, started strong with three quick 3-pointers, creating an early momentum. Bayless senior guard Jyon Thomas led his team with 18 points, while Cameron Aikens recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Potosi’s head coach Jackson Conaway praised his team’s resilience: “They didn’t quit and made some small adjustments… cutting it to four by half was unreal.” Potosi’s defensive strategy shifted the game as they found their rhythm, despite facing foul trouble.

As the clock wound down, Mapes’ clutch plays secured the win, including a critical layup that gave Potosi its first lead at 53-50 with just over two minutes left. “We could tell they were getting tired, and we just kept pushing,” Mapes stated, reflecting the team’s determination.

With this hard-earned victory, Potosi’s players celebrated their triumph, showcasing the heart and tenacity that has defined their season. Fans are eagerly anticipating their next challenge, as the Trojans aim to continue their winning streak into the state sectionals.
