Minnesota Duluth Men’s Hockey Secures NCAA Tournament Spot

The Minnesota Duluth men’s hockey team has secured its place in the NCAA tournament following standout performances from Zam Plante. His game-tying and overtime-winning goals propelled the Bulldogs into the semifinals of the NCHC, effectively guaranteeing their participation in the tournament. According to College Hockey News, UMD now holds a 100% probability of being selected when the 16-team bracket is revealed on March 22, 2026.

Future Scenarios and Rankings

With over 6,730 scenarios still possible in the lead-up to the tournament, UMD is projected to make the NCAA field as one of the ten at-large teams in 85% of those scenarios. In 15% of the remaining scenarios, the Bulldogs can further solidify their position by defeating NCHC regular season champion North Dakota in their upcoming match on Saturday at 6:07 p.m. at Ralph Engelstad Arena and winning the NCHC postseason title the following week against either Denver or Western Michigan.

Currently, UMD sits at No. 8 in the NCAA Percentage Index (NPI), which has replaced the Pairwise rankings as the method used for selecting at-large teams and seeding the NCAA tournament. The NPI closely aligns with the previous Pairwise rankings, taking into account a team’s nonconference record, which has been strong for UMD, boasting a 9-1 record outside the NCHC during the regular season.

Upcoming Tournament Format

The NCAA men’s tournament continues to utilize a four-team regional format at predetermined sites, with this year’s regional games scheduled for March 26-29. The Frozen Four will take place in Las Vegas from April 9-11, 2026.
