UC Davis Aggies Fight for Rex Connors’ Additional Eligibility

Rex Connors, a senior defensive back and all-time tackle leader for the UC Davis Aggies, is striving to return for the 2026 football season after a season-ending knee injury. Connors sustained the injury during a Big Sky Conference matchup against Weber State at UC Davis Health Stadium on September 27, 2023. In an effort to secure Connors an additional year of eligibility, the Aggies have filed a waiver with the NCAA’s Rules Committee for a medical redshirt.

Despite the team’s efforts, the committee initially denied Connors’ request. The situation has become complicated due to specific eligibility rules. To qualify for a medical redshirt, a player must have participated in four games or fewer. This season, Connors played in five games, including the contest against Weber State. However, a game against Mercer University on August 23, which was part of the FCS Kickoff Classic, was halted due to severe weather conditions. The game was called off midway through the fourth quarter with UC Davis leading 23-17, rendering it a no contest.

The Aggies currently hold a record of 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big Sky Conference. If the Mercer game were to count, UC Davis would boast a stronger record of 6-1. The university argues that since they officially participated in only four full games, Connors should be granted an extra year of eligibility.

Coach Tim Plough expressed frustration following a 45-24 victory over Northern Arizona on October 11, stating, “I don’t think that’s right.” He emphasized the team’s commitment to continue appealing the decision until they reach a favorable outcome for Connors. “I’m really hopeful we can win this appeal with the NCAA,” Plough added. He indicated a determination to challenge the committee’s ruling, saying, “They haven’t dealt with Tim Plough yet. I won’t stop until they give me an answer that I’m OK with.”

The situation is further complicated by the status of another senior, linebacker Porter Connors, who has also missed games due to a foot injury sustained during the Weber State contest. “I just want them to be able to play their senior year,” Plough remarked, highlighting the emotional stakes involved for both players.

The Aggies are set to return to action following their bye week. They will face Northern Colorado on October 25, 2023, with kickoff scheduled for noon PDT. As the team navigates this challenging situation, the outcome of their appeal could significantly impact not just Connors’ future, but also the overall morale and performance of the Aggies moving forward.
