Spartans Struggle at Home Despite Villanueva’s Grand Slam in Tough 1-3 Week
The Southwestern Community College Spartans dropped three of four games at home this week, falling just short despite a dazzling grand slam from Wilson Villanueva in the opening inning of game two against Indian Hills. The team now stands at 17-33 overall and 1-9 in conference play, fighting to build momentum before postseason regional championships starting May 7.
Tuesday’s doubleheader kicked off promisingly as the Spartans dominated the first game with a 7-4 victory. Southwestern quickly took a 7-3 lead by the sixth inning thanks to consistent offense from drivers like Anibal Montanez and Jackson McDanel, who each scored two runs. The pitching duo of Ryan Boklmann and Eliot Bergollo combined to hold Indian Hills to four runs — Boklmann leading the way with five strikeouts.
But in the second game, the Spartans stumbled after a fiery start. Villanueva electrified the crowd with a grand slam loaded with bases in the first inning. The offensive explosion gave Southwestern a quick 4-0 lead. However, Indian Hills unleashed a relentless counterattack, pouring in nine runs over the second and third innings to overwhelm the Spartans. Despite solo homeruns from Elias Culzac and Ismael Bencosme, Southwestern ultimately fell 14-8.
Friday Showdown Against Top-Ranked Iowa Western Ends in Two Close Losses
Saturday brought another uphill battle as the Spartans hosted the top-ranked Iowa Western Reivers, who boast a dominating 38-9 overall record and 11-1 conference mark. Southwestern showed grit, even building a 4-1 advantage by the fourth inning. Yet a costly error and wild pitch extended Iowa Western’s inning, allowing them to tie the game and take the lead late. The Spartans pushed back with a solo home run from Brayden Mitchell but ultimately fell 5-4 in a nail-biting finish. The second game ended decisively in the Reivers’ favor, 14-7.
Pitcher Alex Parish made key moments on the mound, striking out four over three innings while Kenton Jensen added another strikeout. Despite the losses, the Spartans fought hard against top competition and demonstrated flashes of their potential as they prepare for the postseason.
Looking Ahead: Postseason and Upcoming Doubleheaders
The Spartans travel to Indian Hills today for a fresh doubleheader and return home tomorrow to face Iowa Western again. With regional championships starting May 7-9, every game counts as Southwestern seeks to shake off a rough streak and close the season strong. Fans are urged to follow the team live as the weeks build toward postseason battles that could redefine the Spartans’ 2026 campaign.
“It was a tough week but the team showed fight, and we’ll look to regroup and push forward in every game from here,” said a Southwestern coach following the losses.
The Spartans’ season is at a critical juncture and their resilience will determine how far they make it in the postseason. With Villanueva’s power showcase still fresh and leadership emerging, Southwestern remains a team to watch as the spring season reaches its pivotal moments.
