Playa del Rey Hit-and-Run Kills Toddler and Man as Driver Flees Scene

Playa del Rey, CA – A devastating hit-and-run crash killed a 1-year-old child and a man early Sunday morning near the 6800 block of South Vista Del Mar, as emergency responders and bystanders struggled to save lives while the suspect fled the scene.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the crash was reported at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday. Two vehicles collided, and the driver of one fled on foot toward the beach, leaving behind a heartbreaking scene. Authorities believe the suspect is a 25-year-old man driving a white Jeep. The man who died at the scene was estimated to be around 30 years old.

One vehicle involved was carrying two adults and the child. The child and a woman, also about 30 years old, were rushed to a nearby hospital, but the child later succumbed to injuries.

Cory Cooper, a Playa del Rey resident and father of two, described his desperate efforts to save the little boy. “When I walked up to the accident, some people were already there, and a man was holding the child,” Cooper told reporters. “It didn’t look like the child was doing well, so we started CPR while waiting for emergency assistance.”

Cooper said he called 911 immediately and followed dispatcher instructions to continue CPR. “Another vehicle pulled up, and a woman ran over holding the child, saying, ‘He’s still warm. He’s still warm,’” he recalled.

The woman and other helpers kept trying to revive the child, providing CPR until paramedics arrived. Unfortunately, despite their urgent efforts, both the child and a man at the scene did not survive.

The crash remains under active investigation by the LAPD, which is now searching aggressively for the hit-and-run suspect. Police urge anyone with information or dashcam footage of a white Jeep fleeing near the South Vista Del Mar area early Sunday to come forward.
