BREAKING: Renowned artist and beloved community member, Cheryl Jean Husby, has passed away peacefully at the age of 76 on October 14, 2025, surrounded by her family at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth. The news of her passing is hitting hard in her community, where she was known not just for her artistic talents but also for her vibrant personality and deep commitment to service.
Cheryl was born on December 30, 1948, in Minneapolis to Dorothy and George Chergosky. She graduated from U-High in 1966, going on to earn her B.F.A. in 1983, M.A. in 1984, and M.F.A. in 1986 from the University of Wisconsin Superior and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Her artistic journey earned her numerous accolades, including 1st place in clay at the Coconut Grove Art Festival.
Cheryl’s legacy extends beyond her impressive resume. She was a passionate gardener, an avid skier, and a dedicated tennis player. She and her husband, Bob Husby, famously lived above a bakery, where they nurtured their creative talents while keeping warm during the frigid winters. They founded Husby Pottery, which took them across the country, including yearly stays in the Florida Keys.
Cheryl was known for her love of community and fun gatherings. From hosting lively parties on New Year’s Day to monthly artist potlucks, her home was a hub for creativity and friendship. She celebrated life’s moments with enthusiasm, whether crafting the best apple pie or cheering on her children and grandchildren.
Her involvement with organizations like the Duluth Art Institute and the Duluth Preservation Alliance showcased her commitment to enriching her community. The family expresses their heartfelt thanks to the dedicated teams at St. Luke’s, Mayo Clinic, and other organizations that provided care during her final days.
A visitation will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, November 5th, at First Lutheran Church, located at 1100 E. Superior Street, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM and a reception. The family welcomes flowers and encourages donations in Cheryl’s honor to the Depot Foundation and Duluth Preservation Alliance.
