Washington Township Revives Historic Thorington Schoolhouse NOW

UPDATE: Washington Township has just revitalized the historic Thorington Schoolhouse, a landmark dating back to the 1840s, marking a significant community effort to preserve local history. Led by Supervisor Sam Previti, the schoolhouse has been relocated to a designated five-acre site, becoming the centerpiece of the newly planned Thorington Park.

This urgent initiative, reported by WWJ Newsradio, comes after years of neglect at the intersection of Mound and 31 Mile roads. The move was confirmed with a majority vote from the Board of Trustees, who approved the purchase of the schoolhouse for $125,000.

The newly envisioned park will feature a play structure, pavilion, and pickleball courts, along with a local apple orchard made possible by donations from area orchardists. This project not only aims to beautify the community but also to provide a rich educational experience.

The logistics of relocating such a historic building were complex. Fred Christian, owner of C & A Building Movers, highlighted the challenges involved in hoisting the structure, which included carefully disconnecting utilities before loading it onto a semi-truck. Videos documenting the intricate operation are part of the community’s effort to share this historic moment.

In a unique educational twist, the township is involving Romeo High School students in the restoration process. The students have discovered historical artifacts, including a fourth-grade test from the 1930s, and are set to restore the building’s windows using period-specific wavy glass. This hands-on learning experience provides students with direct insight into historical preservation.

The efforts to breathe new life into the Thorington Schoolhouse showcase not only a commitment to preserving local heritage but also to fostering community engagement and education. As the revitalization progresses, residents can expect to see significant developments in the coming months.

Stay tuned for further updates on the transformation of this historic site and the upcoming features of Thorington Park, an exciting addition to the Washington Township community.
