Muslim Journalist Sami Hamdi Detained by ICE at SFO Airport

UPDATE: Muslim journalist and political commentator Sami Hamdi was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at San Francisco International Airport early Sunday morning. The detention has sparked outrage and calls for justice from civil rights organizations.

According to Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, Hamdi’s visa was revoked due to concerns over his vocal criticism of the Israeli government. “Under President Trump, those who support terrorism and undermine American national security will not be allowed to work or visit this country,” McLaughlin stated on X, emphasizing the administration’s hardline stance.

Hamdi, originally from the UK, is the Editor-in-Chief of The International Interest, a publication that focuses on global affairs, particularly in the Middle East and Far East Asia. His detention is raising alarms over free speech rights in the U.S.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) condemned the detention as an “injustice,” asserting that Hamdi’s arrest appears to be retaliation for his outspoken views. “Earlier this morning, ICE agents abducted British Muslim journalist and political commentator Sami Hamdi,” CAIR stated. “We can confirm that Mr. Hamdi has not been deported and remains in custody. Our attorneys and partners are working to address this injustice.”

CAIR further warned, “Everyone should recognize that arresting a British citizen legally visiting the United States because he dared to criticize a foreign nation’s genocide is our government’s latest blatant affront to free speech.” The organization called for an end to what they describe as an “Israel-first policy,” arguing that it undermines American values.

As of now, it is unclear what the next steps will be for Hamdi, but legal representatives have mobilized to challenge his detention. The situation is evolving, and advocates are urging immediate action to secure his release.

This incident highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding immigration, free speech, and U.S. foreign policy, particularly regarding criticisms of Israel. Activists and supporters are expected to rally in Hamdi’s defense in the coming days.
